April is an ideal month for Hilo residents to perform spring maintenance on their home’s electrical systems. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your electrical setup is safe and efficient for the warmer months: 1. Inspect Electrical Outlets and Switches Check all outlets and switches for signs of wear or damage. Look for loose plugs, unusual sounds, or flickering lights, which could indicate wiring issues. Replace any damaged components to prevent potential hazards. 2. Test Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) GFCIs are crucial for preventing electrical shock, especially in areas with moisture like kitchens and bathrooms. Test your GFCIs monthly by pressing the test button to ensure they trip properly, then reset them. 3. Clean and Organize Electrical Panels Remove any dust or debris from your electrical panels and ensure the area around them is clear. Label all breakers to make it easier to identify circuits during an emergency or power outage. 4. Check Extension Cords and Power Strips Inspect extension cords and power strips for any signs of fraying or damage. Avoid overloading them and only use cords rated for the power they will carry. 5. Update Light Bulbs to LEDs Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED lights. LEDs use less energy, have a longer lifespan, and emit less heat, making them safer for enclosed fixtures and reducing cooling costs. 6. Examine Outdoor Electrical Components Spring is a good time to inspect outdoor lighting, outlets, and wiring. Ensure they are weatherproof and free from damage. Replace any fixtures that show signs of wear to avoid potential electrical hazards. 7. Schedule a Professional Electrical Inspection Consider hiring a licensed electrician to perform a comprehensive inspection of your home’s electrical system. They can identify and address any hidden issues, ensuring your system is safe and up to code. 8. Install or Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Ensure your home is equipped with working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them monthly, replace batteries as needed, and consider upgrading to interconnected systems for enhanced safety. Conclusion Spring maintenance is essential for keeping your home’s electrical system safe and efficient. By performing these checks and updates, you can prevent potential hazards and ensure your home is ready for the warmer months ahead. Wouldn't it be great to open your electric bill and see that the energy provider owes you money instead of the other way around? That's what thousands of people are experiencing as a result of adding a solar array to their home or rental property. Energy independence is another hedge against inflation. It's no secret that costs for energy are on the rise and will continue to rise in the foreseeable future. Energy providers purchase energy from solar customers at market rates. As market rates increase, so does the value of solar power. It is reasonable to think that adding solar will reduce or eliminate energy costs while adding value to your property. Let's say you have added solar and it is offsetting $150-$300 per month in electricity costs. That savings equates to up to $70,000 in borrowing power on a 30 year mortgage. That could have a dramatic effect on the selling price of a house and more than offset the initial investment of installation. Combine that with current tax benefits and you have a genuine investment that has both immediate and long-term benefits.

How motion detectors work?
Motion detectors are small electronic eyes that detect infrared waves. When the detector senses an object moving across its field of view it electronically turns on the lights. The motion sensing light stays on anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes, depending on how you preset the timer. Then the detector automatically shuts the light off unless it continues to sense movement. A photocell deactivates the motion sensing light during daylight hours. A motion sensored light has a semicircular field of view of up to 240 degrees and a distance range that extends to 70 ft. An outdoor motion sensor light will react to the movement of your dog or an approaching person iff you choose to install one. If nuisance trips concern you, be sure to buy a light that has an adjustable distance/range setting, and an aimable detector unit. An outdoor motion sensor light allows you to operate the light in the conventional, manual way, usually by flipping the motion sensor light switch off for a second, then back on. This allows you to keep the motion lights on at night when you want to, even when there’s no motion. By double flipping a second time, you return to automatic motion sensing lighting. We are happy to install your Attic Fan. We do not sell Attic Fans at this time."At first I was skeptical about an attic fan. I hadn't heard much about them but I sure have benefited since buying one. After doing some research, I learned that my attic can reach up to 150 degrees in the summer, and the extra heat can seep down into my house. This added heat makes it harder to cool my house in the hottest months, which is most of the year because I live in Hawaii. There are other problems too, in the winter mold can form in the attic due to the extra moisture in the air that gets trapped and, as everyone knows, mold and houses do not go together. Their attic fan stood out to me because it uses solar energy. I try to reduce my carbon footprint whenever I can and the attic fan just makes sense because it also saves me tons of money. The cost of the fan and its installation were more than a fan using electricity, but after a few years of using my solar attic fan, I have saved an unbelievable amount on the cooling/heating bill for my house. It has been two years since I bought my fan and I recommend it to anyone wanting to save money without doing any work."
